We’ve been exploring the concept of using open auction to manage advertising on some Stack Exchange sites. Under this model, advertisers (who have been organized into categories based on their products) “bid” for an advertising spot. There is a floor price - a minimum price for the spot, and all bids must exceed that floor price. This community will be testing the open auction experiment, beginning the week of January 13th, 2025. For more information or to provide feedback on the experiment, please refer to the post on Meta Stack Exchange.

I consider it NSFW, how can I report it?

I was viewing a question today, and to my surprise, this ad popped up:

Yup. An ad submitted on AskDifferent's meta which shows the active bounties on AskDifferent was served on Arqade.

Note that there isn't a similar community ad currently submitted for Arqade, so it can't of been a mix-up between the sites.

I was browsing Arqade tonight when a video ad suddenly popped up in the lower right hand corner of my browser. I have never seen "moving" ads on a Stack Exchange site so you can imagine my surprise. The ad was for the Mirage in Las Vegas. Is the site running video ads? Or do I have some adware that got installed unbeknownst to me?

I have been surfing most of the evening and this is the only site I've had the pop up experience so adware seems unlikely, but not impossible. Though I am running Windows Defender so any adware should have been nuked.

Is it intentional that the ads for gaming questions are show on Gaming.SE itself? I'm not seeing the benefit of that, so is this a bug or a feature?

There are many of us on Arqade who would very much like to offload some of the "lore" questions here, so advertising there would definitely be good. – Mark Trapp

Is this true? I know that the two communities are quite different, and there may be a bit of ill will about some of our...less good questions.

But we can, and do answer video-game questions.

Rather than making up some ad from our site that might not fit in here with your ads, would you like to design something that would (hopefully) draw the bad questions out?

I've posted in the sci-fi meta too, in case you like what you see.

The SE team put a lot of effort into the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim vs. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 promotion, I think it could be effective to try and use it to retain more users that get to our site by searching for specific questions.

We get a lot of hits on many questions for new high-profile releases in the first few days. Making them aware that they have the chance to win some very nice prizes by participating in this site might get more people to try it out and contribute questions and answers.

To make those users aware of the promotion we could display an in-house advert for the promotion

on every question tagged Skyrim or CoD:MW3

only for new users without accounts

My idea is that this could help improve our conversion rate, to get users to stay after they got their question answered and to entice them to try out this site and give it a chance.

Lets face it, advertisement is the life blood of the internet. I want to see gaming succeed, and in many ways it has. Particularly it's the fourth most visited site on SE, with 15k visits a day. So, when will Gaming start having ads?

Why do I care? Two reasons.

I want the site to pay for itself, and as such, secure its future.

I'm tired of seeing the Area51 ads.
